The food was delicious, I enjoyed every bite. Mrs Cairns was too distraught to eat. Sensing my eyes on her, she confessed her mounting anxieties. Knowing how much her husband loved his job, she had never confessed how much she feared for him and his well-being.

He has a wonderful team, Mrs Cairns. They are experts and respect your husband – ‘one for all and all for one’ seems to be their motto.”

I succeeded in distracting her; the weather and politics kept her from worrying about her husbands whereabouts. She couldn’t resist my offer for making coffee. The reheated cherry pie incensed the air with the aroma of cherries, cinnamon and vanilla – irresistible for Mrs. Cairns.

Three or four mugs later, Bud jumped up, grabbed the remote control and returned to the table. I seized it and switched the power on. An excited newscaster heralded the apprehension of a kidnapper. “And now to our reporter at the scene!”

The camera showed reporter Jane Good interviewing Mr Cairns. He looked tired and – happy. The kidnapped girl was unharmed, already reunited with her family; the kidnapper was facing jail.

Mrs Cairns eyes watered, Bud nudged a packet of tissues in her hands.
