We walked to my apartment in silence. I fetched a blanket and a cushion for Steve and said good night.

I fell into a fitful sleep. So many open questions. Who was O-Y? This couldn’t seriously be his name, right? What would we find in his mailbox? And who might be that stunning woman?

I woke up drenched in sweat. The smell of coffee wafted in. Steve busied himself in the kitchen. I went to shower and shave.

During breakfast we decided to get to the station, pick up our cars, John and his gear, and drive to the mailbox.

Thirty minutes later we were at our destination. We got out, gathered in front of the mailboxes.

John dusted the mailboxes, took samples. O-Y’s mailbox wasn’t empty. John collected its contents in a bag.

“Such a lonely place,” John commented matter-of-factly.

It was true, Steve looked forlorn.

“Come back with us!”

Steve declined, stating things to be taken care of.
