When I got back to the station, I was ‘armed’. I hastened to the lab, knocked, and entered. John looked up from his samples. Registering the look on my face, he stood up and gratefully accepted my bribe: a coffee and a tuna bagel.

After finishing half of his bagel he looked up, raising his right brow. I handed him the evidence bag with the mug shot. “You need to find out if this is authentic. Where is it from, which language, etc.”

John nodded and set to work. I tiptoed outside.

An hour later, Steve arrived. As usual, he occupied two parking slots. He sauntered in, produced a general wave, settled at my desk. He had showered and even shaved.

We processed his statement. When we were done, Steve leaned back. “How I miss that mad fella! That first night, he had a gorgeous woman with him.”

I stared at him incredulously.
